Buffer Sizing and Reserve Rules
Most colony failures in Beyond These Stars are not production failures. They are buffer failures. A colony that produces exactly what it consumes has no slack, and a colony with no slack cannot survive a single bad cycle. Think in reserve depth rather than production height.
Target Buffer by Phase
| Phase | Food Buffer | Power Buffer | Storage Priority |
|---|---|---|---|
| Early settlement | 1 cycle | 1 cycle | Food, then minerals |
| First technology | 2 cycles | 2 cycles | Energy cells, then food |
| Ecology work | 2 cycles | 3 cycles | Keep space for Ecodome materials |
| Trade and endgame | 3 cycles | 3 cycles | Trade goods, then research stock |
The Storage Ceiling Rule
- Never expand production past storage twice. A warehouse tier only pays for itself if you fill it within two cycles of building it.
- Split storage by resource. A single shared stockpile hides shortages and lets overflow mask a deficit.
- Set a hard cap before you build. Decide the target buffer, then size the warehouse to hold it plus one cycle of production.
Power Redundancy and Blackout Defence
A blackout is the fastest way to lose a colony, because every production building in the game depends on power. The fix is not a bigger single generator. It is making sure a single failure cannot take the whole grid offline.
Split Across Sources
Keep two independent power sources running at all times, ideally a Solar Array and a Fusion Reactor. If one fails, the other carries the colony through the gap without a blackout.
Reserve the Headroom
Do not run power at exactly 1.0 ratio. Aim for 1.2 and keep the surplus as an emergency reserve so a single damaged building does not trigger a cascading failure.
Blackout Drill
Once a month, deliberately kill one power source and confirm the colony survives. If it does not, you do not have redundancy, you have luck.
Ecology Repair Routing
Kewa's health is a compounding stat. A colony that repairs the whale earns better resource quality from every tile it develops, and that bonus applies to tiles you have already built on.
The Ecodome Placement Ladder
- Worst brown patches first. Heavily degraded regions take the longest to recover, so start them early.
- Stack, do not spread. Multiple Ecodomes in one region restore it far faster than one Ecodome per region.
- Follow the extraction sites. Put repair coverage where you are harvesting, because damaged ground yields less per tile.
- Protect the reserve. Keep roughly a quarter of the surface undeveloped so there is always regenerating ground.
- Pair with a Biodome. A Biodome next to a production cluster adds resource quality across the whole area.
Reading Kewa's Health
A healthy whale shows green patches and a health meter above 80%. Trouble shows as brown patches spreading outward and yields dropping on tiles you already harvested. If yields fall on old ground, stop extracting there and send repair crews.
Trade Leverage and Alien Negotiation
Trade is how you break a resource ceiling without over-extracting Kewa. Know which of your resources is genuinely surplus and which is only temporarily ahead.
Negotiation Discipline
- Trade the surplus, not the buffer. If you are two cycles into your reserve, that resource is not for sale.
- Deal in what they want. Vorthan want minerals and tech data, Zephyrians want food and organics, Crystalline want energy and data.
- Spread your partners. Three routes with different species is safer than one route with a generous one.
- Improve relations before you need them. Hostile aliens can raid, and a raid is far more expensive than any bad trade price.
- Expect broken routes. Cosmic events interrupt trade, so keep two cycles of reserves.
When to Buy, When to Build
If a resource can be bought reliably from an alien with a stable route, buy it and spend your build slots on extraction of something they cannot supply. If no route is stable, you need your own production and the trade option is a bonus, not a plan.
Research Acceleration
Research is the only system in the game that scales without costing you land. Two labs researching the same tier is efficient; two labs researching different tiers is a mistake.
Lab Rules
- One tier per lab. Split labs only across two adjacent tiers, never across distant branches.
- Energy cells first. If a lab idles, the bottleneck is energy cells, not research points. Build the factory before the second lab.
- Queue ahead. Never let a lab finish with nothing queued. Empty research time is wasted capacity.
- Efficiency before expansion. Resource Efficiency and Supply Chain Optimisation reduce every later bill, including the cost of the building you want.
Ecology Research Timing
Basic Ecology slows ecological decay. Research it before you open your heaviest extraction zones, because slowing decay afterwards is repairing a problem you could have avoided.
Crisis Drills
Random events are not random disasters to be survived. They are repeatable problems to be prepared for. Run these five drills once your colony has two cycles of reserves.
| Crisis | First Response | Prevention |
|---|---|---|
| Resource shortage | Fix power first, then oxygen, then food | Maintain the 1.1 to 1.5 production band |
| Disease outbreak | Quarantine zones and boost comfort | Good housing and food variety |
| Alien raid | Shut off trade, rebuild storage | Keep relations positive |
| Kewa health crash | Stop extraction, stack Ecodomes | Keep the undeveloped reserve |
| Cosmic storm | Protect power and the lab | Redundant power and two research sources |
